Kogi Police confirm kidnap of man, wife

Commissioner of Police in Kogi, Mr Hakeem Busari, yesterday, confirmed the kidnap of one Henshaw Ativie and his wife in the state on Sunday by unknown gunmen.

Busari said in Lokoja that the husband and wife were kidnapped along Itakpe-Adogo road in Adavi Local Government Area of the state.

He said the couple, their son, 7, and twin daughters, 4, were travelling to Edo in their SUV when they ran into the kidnappers.

The police commissioner said the abductors forced the vehicle to stop by shooting at the tyres before ordering the occupants to come down.

According to him, the kidnappers later led the man and his wife into the nearby bush and left the three children stranded by the roadside.

He said policemen deployed to the scene discovered that one of the twins was hit by a bullet fired by the kidnappers.

The police commissioner said the girl had been taken to hospital for treatment while the remaining two children and the vehicle were in police custody.

He promised that the men of “Operation Puff Adder” recently deployed to the state were already on trail of the kidnappers, giving assurance that the couple would be rescued soon.

In a related development, it was gathered that the kidnappers of a commercial driver popularly called, SAPAMO, and four passengers travelling from Ayetoro/Gbede in Ijumu council area of the State have reportedly demanded N10 million ransom for their release.

The commercial driver and the passengers were said to be returning to Lokoja the state capital, yesterday when they were attacked and abducted along Obajana-Kabba road.

A family source of the driver said the kidnappers have contacted the family demanding for N10m initially.

The source said after much negotiation, the kidnappers reduced the ransom to N4m for their brother (SAPAMO), and the four kidnapped passengers.
